Johnny Popcorn is a band on a mission. Founded by Tone Whitfield and Hezekiah, Johnny Popcorn's music is a mix of rock, punk, funk, and a lot of Philly soul. Whitfield is a respected producer/bassist whom has worked with Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, and Zap Mama, and Estelle, while Hezekiah is a hip hop emcee/Producer with three full-length solo albums under his belt. Hezekiah has worked with an eclectic mix of artists such as Bilal, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, Cody ChestnuTT, and more. The two formed a band as a way of expressing themselves outside of their respected genres.
In 2012, membership of the band grew with the addition of guitarist, Lloyd Alexander and vocalist Jani Coral. Tone is still the man producing the Johnny Popcorn sound while Hezekiah leads the band on stage. Johnny Popcorn has opened for acts such as RJD2, Cody ChestnuTT, Bilal, Oddisee, and Robert Glasper.
Their music has inspired comic book artist Howard “Sketch” Russell to create an illustrated world featuring “The Crow” which explores the band’s lyrics in a colorful and vivid setting.
